Filming Outlander on Schiehallion

From The Dundee Courier - Feb 2016

Scots actor Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser, has previously revealed the small village of Kinloch Rannoch which sits in the shadow of Schiehallion is his favourite location to film in Scotland.

He said: “We filmed a lot of scenes round and about this small village called Kinloch Rannoch. At the centre is Loch Rannoch and at the other end is a mountain called Schiehallion, which they call the mountain of the fairies. It’s this beautiful peak that looks quite iconic.

“We shot there last year on my birthday, and I was very lucky to have the following day off. Everyone else was filming, but I managed to sneak off and climb up the top of the mountain.

“The view was just incredible. It was so dramatic; everything was still covered in snow. It’s just a very magical place.”

The filming of the standing stones, where Claire time travels takes place, is on Dunalastair Estate which owns the western half of Schiehallion.

But please be aware that the stones do not exist here. However the site is an ancient archeological site known as a 'homestead'.

It is on the working farm so if you visit, please do not disturb the sheep or leave litter, and please leave gates as you find them. Please do not block the gateway as farm machinery uses it regularly.

Commercial bus tours should contact Dunalastair Estate regarding access to the site in advance of their proposed visit.Email
